French passport (Passeport français)
is an identity document issued to French citizens. Besides enabling the bearer to travel internationally and serving as indication of French citizenship (but not proof; the possession of a French passport only establishes the presumption of French citizenship according to French law).
Unlike those from most other EU countries which are burgundy, ordinary passports have a Bordeaux-red front cover, with the national emblem of Francee mblazoned in the center of the front cover. The word PASSEPORT
is inscribed below the coat of arms and Union européenne
along with République française
above. The e-passport
cover has a microchip symbol at the bottom. French passports use the standard EU design, with the standard passport containing 32 pages.
Cancellation of the passport was very harsh where a slanted cutting was made on all of the pages including the cover.
ELECTRONIC vs BIOMETRIC
An RFID-tag is embedded in the cover. This digitized information is the name, date of birth, nationality and passport number.
Additionally for Biometric Passport, the chip now stores the scanned photograph and two fingerprints of the passport holder. The latter has the word passport underlined.
