Moldovan Identity Card

The Moldovan identity card is a compulsory identity document issued in the Republic of Moldova. Every Moldovan citizen who resides in the Republic of Moldova must have an ID card. Moldovan ID cards are issued by the Public Services Agency.

Top of the card bears a title REPUBLICA MOLDOVA - BULETIN DE IDENTITATE (Republic of Moldova - Identity Card) and country code MDA. 

The following are required to have an ID card: from birth until 10 years of age (the card can be issued without bearers photo), from 10 years of age until 16, from 16 years of age until 25, and from 25 years of age until 45. After 45 years of age, the ID card is not required to be renewed.

SERIES 1996



First issued on 1 May 2008. The 1996 model is the first model of the identity card issued to citizens of the Republic of Moldova since the proclamation of independence in 1991. Issued since June 1996. The background image of the plastic card is made in the colors of the national flag of Moldova : blue, yellow and red. Plastic card is made of special strong impact-resistant plastic.

The card is hard plastic and rectangular in shape, 105 × 74 mm in size with a thickness of 0.7mm. On the front side of the card on the left side a color photograph of the bearer is placed along with a round hologram and a signature of the bearer. On the bottom of the card the Identity Card's Number is placed.

Top of the card bears a title REPUBLICA MOLDOVA - BULETIN DE IDENTITATE (Republic of Moldova - Identity Card), to the left side of the title there is a Moldovan Coat of Arms and to the right side of the title the Identity Card's Number is placed.

In the background of the title page, the coat of arms of Moldova is depicted. The Moldovan national pattern is depicted on the left side of the title page.

At the top of the title page in Romanian, the country name - REPUBLICA MOLDOVA, the code name of the document - MDA CA and the title of the document - BULETIN DE IDENTITATE - are written in capital letters. In the lower-left corner, there is a metal hologram, which can be shimmered with different colours from exposure to light. In the background of the hologram is the coat of arms, the name of the country REPUBLICA MOLDOVA, the three-letter country code MDA (two times) and the six-digit number of the hologram. On the radius of the hologram are 15 five-pointed stars.

The document is code-named CA for the plastic card and RA for the accompanying sheet.

• A colour photograph of the holder in the size of 35 × 45 mm (may be absent if the holder's age is less than 10 years);
• Background photo of the owner in grey tones (introduced since June 1, 2004, on documents issued earlier - absent)
• First name (Romanian);
• Surname (in Romanian);
• Date of birth (in format - DD MM YYYY);
• Place of birth (in format - three-letter country code, city or region);
• Sex (M - if male, "F" - if female);
• Group and Rh factor of blood, growth (in centimetres), eye colour (in Romanian);
• Date of issue (in format - DD MM YYYY);
• Department of issue (digital format);
• Expiration date (in the format - DD MM YYYY);
• Series and ID number (in red).
• Under the photograph is the owner's signature. In the lower right corner is written the three-letter country code - "MDA".

On the reverse of the plastic card is made in blue tones. In the background, the Forty Fortress is depicted. The name of the country - "REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA" is written in uppercase letters in English, in which the title of the document - "IDENTITY CARD" - is also written in capital letters in English.

The reverse side contains the following information:

• Nationality (in three-letter format);
• Identification number (13 digits)
• Surname (in Romanian and Russian);
• Name (Romanian and Russian);
• Patronymic (in Romanian and, sometimes, in Russian);
• Place of birth (in the format - three-letter country code, city or district) in Romanian and Russian;
• Date of birth (in format - DD MM YYYY);
• Sex (M - if male, "F" - if female);
• Expiration date (in the format - DD MM YYYY).
• Below in the white box are letters and numbers. On the right side on the red background is a bar code .

 
SERIES 2013





First issued on 7 March 2013.

On the front side of the card on the left side a color photograph of the bearer is placed along with a round hologram and a signature of the bearer.

The card was resized to follow international ISO format and information was printed in Romanian and Russian (Cyrillic).
 
SERIES 2015



From 1 September 2015 a new edition of identity cards was introduced. New cards have a slightly different design and are made of polycarbonate. The bearer's photograph is now in black-and-white format only. The new technology involves the use of laser equipment for imprinting data onto the internal layer of the card. This system is based on the use of the next-generation materials and equipment, in compliance with European Union directives on document safety.

New identity cards are being issued in both Electronic (C series) and Non-electronic (B series) version.

It has similar data fields to Series 2013.

Moldovan citizens up to 16 years of age inclusive can receive ID card without any fees. All other citizens must acquire ID card for a minimum cost of 130 Moldovan lei for a non-electronic version (B series) and 700 Moldovan lei for an electronic version (C series).

PAPER SHEET



All three series, in addition to the ID card a soft paper sheet is issued, bearing information on residency, civil and military status. The paper sheet is also used when voting. Each series has a different design.

BORDER CROSSING

As of 19 February 2019, Moldovan are permitted to travel to Turkey visa-free^[1].
