Malaysia's Driving License
A driver's licence (or driving licence) is required in Malaysia before a person is allowed to drive a motor vehicle of any description on a road in Malaysia under the Road Transport Act 1987, section 26(1). Under section 26(1) of the Road Transport Act, an individual must possess a valid driving licence before being permitted to drive on the road, or can be prosecuted under section 26(2) with upon conviction, is liable to fines or jail or both of them. Driving licence holders are subject to all traffic rules stated in the Road Transport Act 1987.
There are five main types of driving license in Malaysia, namely: -
i) Learner's Driving Licence (LDL)
The LDL holders are only permitted to drive vehicle displaying the 'L' plate owned by driving schools under the supervision of a driving school instructor. For motorcycle LDL, they are permitted to ride a motorcycle without a pillion. The LDL may be renewed every 3 or 6 months to the maximum of 2 years. After the 2 years due date, the LDL holders may need to start over the entire driving lesson procedures in order to obtained new LDL.

Starting September 2014, LDL licence is issued after the candidate of Section I examination pass their exam without needs to attend Safety Driving Learning Class. licence holders are only permitted to drive cars displaying the L plate owned by driving schools under the supervision of a driving school instructor. For motorcycle learner's licence holders, they are permitted to ride a motorcycle without a pillion. The learner's licence may be renewed every 3 or 6 months but the licence cannot be possessed for more than 2 years. After the 2 years due date, the licence holders may go to Road Transportation Department (JPJ) to attend of KPP01.
ii) Probationary Driving Licence (PDL)
Possessed by new drivers who have passed all the driving lesson procedures and tests. New drivers are subject to the 10-point KEJARA demerit point system, where points will be deducted according to the types of traffic infractions. The PDL will be revoked after a PDL holder accumulates 10 demerit points. Probationary drivers are required to display the probationary license plate (marked with white capital P in square red background) at the front and back of their vehicle respectively. The PDL may be upgraded to a full competent driving license (CDL) after 2 years, and a grace period of a year is given to upgrade the license before the licensee may need to start over the entire driving lesson procedures.

CDL may be renewed for every 1, 2, 3 or 5 years. A grace period of three years is given to renew the license before it lapsed. The CDL holders may need to start over the entire driving lesson procedures after the license lapsed.

Special driving license for drivers of commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks, issued jointly by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP).
or Commercial Driving licence - a special driving licence for commercial vehicle drivers such as lorries and buses, issued jointly with the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Authority (LPKP).
v) International Driving Permit (IDP)
International Driving Permit allowed Malaysian to drive outside of the country. Foreigners with IDP issued by their respective countries may also be allowed to drive in Malaysia for a period of 1 year.
According to the Geneva Convention treaty (1949), this facility has been agreed by the countries that signed it.
In order to apply for International Driving Permit (IDP), You need:
i) Valid driving license for Class B2 or D.
ii) Photocopy of the above license (Both sides).
iii) Original and photocopy of identity card (Both sides).
iv) 2 passport size photographs.
v) Complete Form JPJ L1.
vi) Payment of RM150 per year.
Attend to any JPJ offices around the country to submit your IDP application. You can also go to the AAM office (Automobile Association of Malaysia) to submit your IDP application. You need to surrender your domestic license to JPJ as you are not allowed to hold 2 types of licenses at a time. If you no longer require the IDP, you may be go to the JPJ offices to get back your domestic license. It should be noted that renewal fee for IDP is RM150 per annum, compared with domestic license which is only RM30 per annum.
The IDP can be renewed with the following procedures:
1) The license may be renewed in Malaysia only.
2) Provide 2 passport size photographs.
3) Present your IDP for renewal.
4) Complete Form JPJ L1.
5) RM150 per annum for the renewal fee.

E1 - Trucks with unloaded weight not exceeding 7500 kg
E2 - Trucks with unloaded weight not exceeding 5000 kg
F - Tractors / Light motorized machines (wheeled) with unloaded weight not exceeding 5000 kg
G - Tractors / Light motorized machines (chained) with unloaded weight not exceeding 5000 kg
H - Tractors / Heavy motorized machines (wheeled) with unloaded weight exceeding 5000 kg
I - Tractors / Heavy motorized machines (chained) with unloaded weight exceeding 5000 kg
A - Invalid Carriage (Motorcycle) unladen weight not exceeding 450 kg
A1 - Invalid Carriage (Motorcar) unladen weight not exceeding 3500 kg
B - Motorcycle exceeding 500 cc
